THE MIRACLE MEDICINE MAN

A brief introduction of Mr. Kumar Chettri:

Mr Kumar Chettri in his mid 40's is a simple, modest man from Gairigaon, Tung, Darjeeling. He works as a night guard in T.O.P (Town Out Post), Kureseong (a Sub division of Darjeeling) from 10 p.m. till 3 a.m. the next morning.

He was born in Upper Turuk Busty, Banguda, Darjeeling. He shifted to his current residence around 22 years ago. His family members include his wife Mrs. Bacase Chettri and his three sons Mr. Rajesh Chettri, Mr. Raju Chettri and Mr. Roshan Chettri.

His Medical Career:

Mr. Kumar Chettri used to work as a night guard in the H.M.T
( Hindustan Machine Tools ) factory. In the daytime he used to accompany the scientists of the Research Centre, Gairigaon, in search of local medicinal plants. It was during this period that he started realizing the importance of the plants around him which until then was of no or little value to him. Thus started his medical career. He started doing research on these plants. Having done so for a period of eight years, he started treating the patients in his locality. That was around six years ago. Today, Mr. Chettri claims that he can treat patients suffering form ailments like Kidney Problem, Heart Problem, Epilepsy, Diabetes, Piles and Liver Jaundice.

Method and duration of of treatment:

After having examined the patient or his / her medical report and depending upon their problems he prepares the medicines. The ailments, their duration of treatment and number of successful treatments are listed below.

According to Mr. Kumar Chettri his most successful treatment was that of Mr. Karna Bahadur Rai.

Mr. Karna Bahadur Rai was suffering from a 7 year old Gastric Ulcer Cancer and had almost given up his hope of living. He had been rejected by all the hospitals and nursing homes around.

It was around 2 years ago when he came to know about Mr. Kumar Chettri. The patient consulted the doctor and his treatement started immediately. He had a sore ( knot ) of about 300 gms inside his body then. Gradually the patient started recovering and today he can do his normal duty just the way he used to before.

This is just one of the cases. Mr Kumar revealed lots of cases like this to us which unfortunately cannot be listed here due to our space constraint.

Mr. Karna Bahadur Rai, after his successful treatment.

As told to Mr. Kesang.T.Bhutia and Mr. Rajesh Singh

His aim in life:

His main aim in life is to serve mankind. So he charges minimum fees for treatment, just enough to earn him his daily bread and butter. He wants to be recognised as a good human being and a good doctor. He wants to keep alive this method of treatment. So he has already started imparting this knowledge to his wife and his three sons. He has room only for 2 patients in his house and if need be he asks his villagers to provide accomdation for patients from outside. Therefore Mr. Kumar has a dream of starting a small hospital near his house to accomodate atleast 10 - 12 patients.
