'This
year 1866 may be taken as marking an epoch in the history
of Darjeeling ........the Hill Cart road was completed.
From this time dates the first attempt to make the hills
the home of European Education in India.'
With the clearing of forests, laying of railway tracks,planting
of tea came education.Under the gaze of the colonizers Darjeeling
was born and with it the concept of a modern English township.
Strategically
located in the crossroads of AsioMongloid cultures, Darjeeling
provided a respite for the colonizerism their march of empire
building. They came to rule and conquer but decided to stay.
The scenic splendour, the conducive surroundings, climatic
temper and the rich cultural concourse caught the been advocating
the establishing of Hill schools for Europeans and his efforts
were supported by Lord Canning who pointed out in a celebrated
minte how the domiciled English and Eurasians woul if neglected
become profiteers ......'.From the first, mission aries
emerged as pioneers in the field of education . Foremost
among them being Rev.William Macfarlane of the Church f
Scotland .This was 1869. A Highlanders a system of education
based on that of which he himself was an admirable product.
This colonizers invested a certain amount of exoticism to
Darjeeling - and this is mainly to be seen in its educational
system -English, imported and elitist.
