EQUIPMENT
WING
a)
HMI STORE: This store provides mountaineering equipment and clothing
to the personnel who would attend the various courses at this institute.
b) JAYAL MEMORIAL FUND STORE: In memory of its first principal Major
Nandu Jayal the institute started an equipment store for supplying
equipment to various Indian expedition.
MEDICAL WING
Medical
Inspection Room (M. I. Room) with a medical officer, a Nursing Assistant
and latest equipment is replete to serve at the Medical Wing of
the Institute.
HOSTEL
Designed
on the model of Swiss Youth Hostels,the institute has a hostel which
accommodates trainees.
CHEEMA INDOOR
ROCK CLIMBING HALL (Artificial Wall) :This
Indoor Artificial has been named after Lt. Col. A S Cheema, former
Principal who climbed the summit of Mount Everest in 1965. The wall
has both panel and rock surfaces with removable synthetic holds,
which offer the flexibility of route. Being indoors it remains in
use even during monsoon months of the year. On international standard
imprint
panel outdoor climbing wall measuring 6 metres wide and 15 metres
high is also near completion.

MAIN MUSEUM
The
institute has two museums. The main museum has a relief model
of the Himalaya,colored in various shades, showing the principal
peaks. It has a collection of dresses of hill folks in the
Himalaya, flags and pennants planted on peaks climbed by Indian
Expeditions, charts and photographs showing the heights of
peaks and list of high altitude birds, fishes and butterflies.
A mountaineering test showing various types of mountaineering
gear and equipment carried at high altitude is pitched inside
the museum. The visitors get a reasonable good idea about
mountain climbing from the exhibits displayed in the museum.The
pictures of famous mountaineers with their mountaineering
background and pictures of mountaineering terminology are
exhibited in this museum. The activities in the various courses
conducted by the institute are exhibited with photographs
and slides.

EVEREST
MUSEUM
The Indian Mountaineering
Foundation donated a number of exhibits and photographs for setting
up the museum.It gives a chronological history of attempts on the
mountain, starting from 1852, when peak XV on the survey of the Indian
maps, was found by Radha Nath Sirdar to be the highest pinnacle on
the earth.
A relief model of Everest
reopen and large number of presents made to the Institute by various
Everest Expeditions are on display. Some of the personal clothes
used by Tenzing during his ascent of Everest are also on display.
LIBRARY
The
HMI is equipped with a well stocked library, which has now more
than 2500 books covering a wide range of subjects, principally mountaineering,
as also on travel and exploration, astronomy, geology, flora, fauna
etc.

TELESCOPE
A
powerful Veb Carl Zeiss Jena telescope capable of astronomical
observations installed at HMI is of great interest to the
visitors. One can view the beautiful Kanchenjunga range through
this telescope. It was presented by Adolf Hitler to Maharaja
Judh Shumsher Jung Bhabur Rana,Commander -in chief of Royal
Nepal Army. It was passed down to his son General Shamsher
Jung Bahadur Rana, who presented it to Himalayan Mountaineering
Institute on July 1961.
